New York Medical College At Metropolitan Hospital Center

General Surgery Residency Training Program

Letter from the Program Director

Dear Applicants:

Thank you for visiting our website to learn more about the New York Medical College at Metropolitan Hospital Center (MHC) General Surgery Residency Training Program. These two historic institutions have been formally affiliated since 1875, and although various residency programs in medical specialties have arisen within this institutional partnership in the distant past, a shared General Surgery Program with MHC has not been a primary part of the medical school affiliation, until now.

As the Program Director of the first new General Surgery training program in New York City in over 50 years, I am humbled by the task of building this new program. Having begun the residency program in 2012, we are currently progressing through our sixth year, and in my opinion have developed an outstanding program. We have recruited excellent residents through the NRMP Match since 2013. After initial accreditation in 2012, our program received continued ACGME approval from our site visit in 2015.

With over 30 years of experience in training Surgical Residents, I feel very well-qualified to organize and lead this program. In my opinion, training Surgical Residents is an honor and a privilege, and is one of the great passions in my academic career. To date, I have trained approximately 130 chief residents in Surgery, and approximately forty percent of these residents are in academic surgery and thirty percent of these 130 residents were women. In fact, I am very proud of each and every resident that I have graduated from the program. Moreover, I am very confident this new program will produce the same quality of excellent surgeons as we have been able to in my previous programs, for either Rural Surgery practice, General Surgery, and/or any of the surgical sub-specialties.

Please take a moment to read about our program and partner institutions in detail. Likewise, we look forward to reading your applications and learning more about you. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have about our residency program, about the field of General Surgery, or about living in New York City.

I very much look forward to meeting you during our interview dates.

Sincerely,
Marc K. Wallack, M.D., F.A.C.S.
